The Order of Addition: Water First Chemical Second Surfactant Last

Picture this for a second. You are on site, you grab an empty container, and you pour five litres of raw fifteen percent sodium hypochlorite straight into the bottom. Then you stick a hose in and blast it with fresh water. What happens? Instant splashback. Fine chemical mist blowing right back into your face, your clothes, your eyes. I, I, I see contractors do this far too often, and it is outright dangerous.

There is a fundamental sequence in professional exterior cleaning that should be etched into every van dashboard. Water first, chemical second, surfactant last. It is a non negotiable rule. When you put the bulk water in the container first, then carefully add your chemical, the concentrate disperses immediately into a larger volume. You eliminate that violent exothermic reaction risk and those heavy chemical splashes. Simple physics, really, but it saves your eyes and your uniform.

And then comes the final step, adding the surfactant. Now, I know blokes who still squeeze a half bottle of household washing up liquid into their tank. Please, stop doing that. Household detergent is not designed for heavy sodium hypochlorite solutions. It breaks down, causes uncontrollable foaming, and can leave ugly sticky films on render. You want a purpose made bleach stable product like Clever Wash Surfactant. It clings to vertical surfaces, improves dwell time, and stays stable in the mix.

I, I, I was doing a site audit a few months back, and I saw a contractor decanting raw bleach right next to a customer's brand new metallic silver German saloon car. Open van door right behind him, wind blowing toward the paintwork. One small wobble or breeze, and you are paying thousands in cosmetic bodywork repairs. Always set up your mixing area on a stable, level spot away from customer vehicles, open drains, and delicate landscaping.

Now, let us talk about getting your mix percentage right instead of guessing. The golden formula you need to memorise is: litres of concentrate required equals target strength divided by stock strength times final volume. Let us run through a real example. Say you want to make twenty litres of a three percent target solution, and your fresh sodium hypochlorite stock is fifteen percent.

You divide three by fifteen, which gives you zero point two. Then you multiply zero point two by your total desired volume of twenty litres. That gives you exactly four litres of raw chemical. So, following our mixing rule, you put sixteen litres of clean water into your container first, carefully measure and pour in four litres of fifteen percent hypochlorite, and then add your surfactant according to the label. That is how you get a precise, predictable three percent mix every single time.

Heat Degradation and Professional Mixing Protocols

Here is something a lot of softwashers forget, especially in the middle of summer. Sodium hypochlorite is not a stable chemical. It is constantly degrading, and heat and sunlight speed up that process massively. That fifteen percent drum sitting in the back of a hot van for three weeks? It might only be twelve or ten percent active strength by the time you use it.

If you do your math assuming it is still fifteen percent, your target three percent render mix might actually land on the wall as a weak one point five percent solution. And what happens then? The organic growth does not clear properly, the black spot remains, and you get an embarrassing callback from an unhappy customer. You waste fuel, time, and reputation going back to re clean a job you under mixed.

This is why batch mixing large drums days in advance is a trap. Not only does the chemical lose its active punch sitting around in a diluted state, but carrying unlabelled pre mixed chemical around in your van creates massive compliance risks under COSHH regulations. Fresh mixing on site, or using a calibrated proportioning system, ensures your application strength is accurate and your site documentation stays solid.
