You are standing in front of a rendered wall, right beneath a window sill, and there is this nasty dark drip mark streaking straight down. So what do most blokes do? They grab the tank, mix up a proper heavy batch of sodium hypochlorite, say five percent active strength, and they blast it. And then... they stand there. Five minutes go by. Ten minutes. Twenty minutes. And that dark mark? It has not moved a single millimeter. Not even a tiny bit. So what is the gut reaction? Well, the cowboy reaction is, oh, it must need more power. Let us dump more raw chemical in the tank, crank up the concentration, and hit it harder. But here is the brutal truth that costs contractors thousands of pounds every single year: if a stain is inorganic, throw all the bleach in the world at it, and it will never, ever clear.

You see, chemical action is not just about raw power, it is about basic, simple chemistry. Sodium hypochlorite is an oxidiser. Its whole job in softwashing is to attack and break down organic cell walls. We are talking about green algae, black fungi, lichen, or red algae like Trentepohlia. You spray a proper hypo mix on organic growth and boom, within two to five minutes, those cells rupture, the chlorophyll breaks down, and the biological stain disappears right before your eyes. It is brilliant. But... if that streak under the window sill is iron oxide from a rusty fixing, or mineral salts from efflorescence, or carbon pollution from a diesel exhaust, bleach is completely blind to it. An inorganic stain demands a completely different pH target. Rust needs an acid like oxalic acid, not a massive dose of heavy alkali.

And look, you do not need an expensive lab kit on site to figure out what you are dealing with. All you need is a plain cotton bud and a single drop of your mixed chemical. I call this the sixty second bleach test, and it saves so much headache. You find the darkest spot on the wall, dab one drop of your hypo mix onto that cotton bud, and hold it against the stain for a minute. If it turns clear or white almost instantly, fantastic! It is biological growth, so crack on with your standard softwash treatment. But if that stain refuses to budge, do not go dumping more bleach into your mix. If you crank up the hypo strength on a stubborn inorganic mark, you are not going to clean it. You are just going to strip the pigment straight out of the monocouche render, or burn the lead flashings nearby, or leave a permanent white halo that looks ten times worse than the original stain.

If you see a white, powdery bloom oozing out near mortar joints on brickwork or stone, that is lime efflorescence. And if you are looking under a soffit right above a busy driveway or near a boiler flue and you see greasy, dark bands, that is atmospheric carbon pollution from diesel fumes. Every single one of those stains speaks a different chemical language.

Matching the right chemistry to the actual root cause is how you protect the surface and get the job done fast.
