Why Acid Destroys Limestone and Travertine

Chapter 1

The Acid Trap: Why Standard Cleaners Eat Limestone and Travertine

You know, there is a specific phone call I dread getting, and er, it usually starts with the exact same sentence. Mark, I think I have ruined a client's driveway, or Mark, the patio has turned completely white and it is fizzing. It happens more often than you would think, and honestly, it is almost always a five thousand pound mistake waiting in the wings.

We are talking about calcium carbonate stone today. Limestone, travertine, polished marble. Surfaces that look incredible when they are laid, but the second you treat them like standard concrete or sandstone, things go sideways fast. You see, a lot of guys, especially when they are starting out, they see rust or efflorescence or heavy atmospheric dirt, and their instinct is to grab a bottle of brick wash or a heavy acid cleaner. And, um, if you spray hydrochloric or brick acid onto sandstone or granite, well, granite and sandstone are silica based. They can handle a bit of mild acid without melting away.

But limestone and travertine? That is compacted calcium carbonate. It is literally compressed shells and sea life from millions of years ago. And when acid touches calcium carbonate, you are not just cleaning the surface, you are triggering a violent chemical reaction. The acid reacts with the stone to create soluble calcium salts, water, and carbon dioxide gas. That gas is the fizzing you hear. That fizzing is literally the surface of the stone dissolving right in front of your eyes.

I, I, I actually had a call a while back from a contractor down in Surrey. Good lad, hard worker, but he was in a complete panic. He had just finished a brand new black limestone patio, beautiful installation. But there was some light efflorescence coming up through the joints, those white salt deposits. So he grabbed a bottle of standard brick wash from his van, sprayed it on, didn't test it, and within sixty seconds, white streaks everywhere. The acid had stripped the top layer of pigment and etched right into the stone. He ended up with a three thousand five hundred pound replacement bill on his hands, all because he did not recognise what the stone was made of before applying chemistry.

And, you know, when people realise acid is dangerous, their second instinct is to say, alright, I will just use pure water and turn the pressure washer up. But that brings its own nightmare. If you take a three thousand PSI pressure washer to porous limestone to blast out black spot lichen, you are not saving the stone. You are using brute mechanical force to tear open the microscopic structure. You strip the smooth finish right off, leaving open voids and capillaries. And guess what happens three months later? Moisture sits in those new microscopic craters, algae spores land, and the biological growth comes back twice as fast and twice as deep as before. You cannot blast your way out of a chemistry problem.

Chapter 2

The Safe Softwash Protocol: Controlled Chemistry and Dwell Time

So, um, how do we actually clean these delicate stones safely without causing permanent damage or stripping the surface? It all comes down to a simple, repeatable protocol, and it starts before you even pull a hose off your van. I call it the sixty second diagnosis and pre wet rule.

First, if you are ever unsure what type of stone you are standing on, test it in an inconspicuous spot. A single drop of weak acid on a hidden corner will tell you instantly if it fizzes. If it fizzes, keep all acidic products far away from that job. Second, always pre wet porous stone with fresh water before you apply your cleaning mix. Why? Because dry stone acts like a sponge. If you put chemical straight onto bone dry limestone, it sucks the solution deep into the pores where you cannot rinse it out properly. Pre wetting fills those deeper pores with clean water, so your active chemical stays where it belongs, right on the surface working on the algae and organic growth.

Now, for the chemical blend itself. Instead of aggressive acids or high pressure, we use a controlled low pressure sodium hypochlorite mix. For limestone and travertine, you want to dilute your mix down to a controlled one point five to two percent active sodium hypochlorite strength. And here is the secret ingredient, you must pair it with a dedicated surfactant like Clever Wash. A proper bleach stable surfactant breaks the surface tension of the water. It allows the mix to cling to vertical edges, penetrate the surface biofilm, and keep the treatment wet during its dwell time.

That dwell time does the heavy lifting for you. You let the chemistry oxidise the lichen and algae at a cellular level, then you rinse it gently with low pressure. No etching, no white chalky residue, no stripping the surface finish, and no three thousand pound replacement bills. That is what separates a true professional softwasher from a splash and dash operator who just blasts away without understanding what they are standing on.
