The Hidden Pitfalls of Batch Tanks vs Injector Dials

I got a call late Tuesday afternoon from a contractor who was completely at his wits end. He was standing in front of a lovely new monocouche render job, red algae everywhere, and he had already been over it twice. He told me, Mark, I have got my proportioning rig dialed in at three percent, but it is just not touching it. So I asked him one simple question. Have you actually measured what is coming out of the nozzle, or are you just reading the sticker on the dial?

And there was this long pause on the phone. You see, he was running 50 metres of half inch hose off his van. By the time that mix traveled through fifty metres of friction and backpressure, his actual output at the tip was under one percent active strength. He thought he was hitting it with three percent, but he was barely giving it a rinse. And that right there is the classic trap with proportioning systems.

Now, don't get me wrong. I, I, I love proportioning gear. Systems like the Dosatron or the Clever Injector are incredible bits of kit. They save you time, they save you from lugging heavy tanks around, and they stop you from constantly measuring out liquid on site. But here is the thing. They trade simple mental calculations for system complexity.

When you batch mix, say you make up a 100 litre batch in a dedicated tank. If you put sixteen litres of water and four litres of fifteen percent sodium hypochlorite in that container, you know for a absolute fact that you have got a three percent mix. The chemistry in that tank cannot lie to you. It does not matter if your hose is ten metres long or one hundred metres long, the strength in the tank remains three percent.

With an inline proportioner, you are relying on fluid physics. Line friction, small hose internal diameters like half inch, high flow rates, and even the thick viscosity of cold chemical will create backpressure. That backpressure restricts how much concentrate the manifold can physically draw up. So while your dial face says three percent, the physics at the end of your lance might only be delivering one percent or less. You are essentially working blind unless you check it.

And look, I am not pointing fingers here. I have made every single mistake in the book over the years. I remember back in my early days, I used to batch mix by eye when I was in a rush. I would have half a tank left over from a driveway job, and I would just splash in another couple of gallons of hypo and top it up with the garden hose. I thought I was being efficient.

In reality, I was pushing what should have been a safe two percent render mix right up to four percent or higher. I was burning through my profit margins by wasting expensive concentrate, and even worse, I was risking severe chemical burn on the homeowner's prize rose bushes from heavy runoff. Guesswork in this line of work always costs you money, whether it is in wasted chemical or damaged property.

Calibrating for Profit and Raising Your Professional Standard

So how do you make sure your equipment is actually delivering what you think it is? It comes down to a dead simple routine I call the 60 second bucket test. Before you unpack fifty metres of hose on a commercial site, grab a calibrated one litre measuring jug and a clean five litre bucket.

Set your proportioner to your target strength, run your system for a few seconds to prime the line, and then fill that jug straight from the nozzle. If you are aiming for a two percent active application strength from a fifteen percent stock drum, your actual mix ratios need to align precisely in that jug. Testing output at the tip takes literally one minute, but it guarantees that you are not under treating the building or dumping cash down the drain.

Another huge mistake I see contractors make with proportioners is the sequence of adding additives. Always introduce your bleach compatible surfactant, like Clever Wash, into the mix correctly. If you draw heavy, neat surfactant directly through certain proportioning valves without proper dilution or mixing sequences, you can create air locks or sticky gel blockages inside the delicate internal seals.

Using a proper softwash surfactant is essential because it breaks surface tension and creates that rich, controlled cling on vertical render, fascias, and powder coated cladding. That extra hang time means the chemistry stays on the organic stain doing its job rather than sloughing off onto the ground. But you have got to respect how the equipment handles those additives.

I want every contractor listening to adopt a quick pre flight checklist before starting any job. First, check your raw stock strength with a hydrometer or test strip, because old bleach degrades rapidly in hot weather. Second, run your bucket test at the nozzle to confirm your real world delivery. And third, always carry out a hidden test patch on a small, discreet fifty millimetre area before you put together your final quote.

At the end of the day, having a flashy van setup with expensive pumps and polished dials does not automatically make you a professional. Real authority in this industry comes from understanding substrate physics, mastering your chemical ratios, and protecting your customer's building.
