You know, I, I see it happen almost every single week across the UK. A contractor turns up to a driveway with a massive machine, cranks it straight up to two hundred and fifty bar, snaps on a narrow turbo nozzle, and just starts blasting away. And on paper, in the moment, it looks like magic because the moss is flying off, the dirt is disappearing, and the surface looks instant bright. But then the sun comes out the next morning, the wet surface dries, and suddenly you see absolute catastrophe.

What actually happened there? Well, high pressure water applied with an aggressive nozzle does not just wash dirt. It acts like a mechanical chisel. On concrete block paving, it literally strips the smooth top face right off the paver, exposing the raw aggregate underneath. On Indian sandstone, that concentrated cutting force leaves circular scars and gouges across the stone texture that can never, ever be repaired. And worst of all, blasting straight down into joints blows the kiln dried jointing sand deep down into the bedding layers or right out onto the lawn, completely destabilising the blocks.

I, I remember getting called out to a job a couple of years back. A homeowner had hired a splash and dash pressure washing guy to clean a massive block paved driveway and some delicate sandstone borders. The guy spent six hours holding a turbo lance four inches from the stone. When I walked onto that site the next morning with the customer, it looked like someone had taken a lawnmower and carved tiger stripes across every single slab. Hundreds of pounds of surface damage overnight, all because he tried to force a result using brute strength instead of basic chemistry. So how do you actually clean these driveways safely without relying on raw mechanical pressure? You let chemistry do the heavy lifting before you even think about rinsing. Once you have completed a safe, chemical assisted clean on block paving, the job is only halfway done. You have to reinstate those joints properly. But there is one critical rule here that so many people break, and that is the drying rule. You must, must wait for the surface and the joints to be completely dry before you touch a bag of kiln dried sand. If you sweep sand onto a damp block paved driveway, the moisture instantly binds the fine sand grains together. It clumps on top of the blocks, stains the surface, and refuses to drop into the joint gaps properly, leading to joint failure as soon as the weather turns.

You either re sand late in the afternoon on a warm, dry day, or you come back the following morning when the substrate is bone dry. You brush the fine kiln dried sand right to the bottom of the joints to lock those blocks back together structurally. But if you just stop there, those empty, freshly cleaned joints are a prime breeding ground for fresh weed seeds and algae spores blowing in on the wind.
