Protecting Decking: Bleach, Brighteners, and Drying Rules

Chapter 1

The Lignin Trap: Why Strong Bleach and Dry Timber Destroy Decking

I got a call last summer from a contractor who was, um, absolute bits. He had just sprayed a standard three percent render mix straight onto a bone dry, hundred square metre softwood deck. And within ten minutes, three thousand pounds worth of timber turned this ghostly, chalky white, with fibres standing up like a frayed old rope.

What he did not realise, and what so many lads in our industry learn the hard way, is that wood is not render. It is not concrete. It is not K Rend. You cannot treat an organic, living cellular structure like an inert piece of stone. When you hit dry wood with strong sodium hypochlorite, you trigger what I call the lignin trap.

Lignin is essentially the organic glue that binds wood fibres together and gives timber its natural structural strength and rich, golden tone. Strong bleach literally digests lignin. It breaks down those glue bonds, strips the color out, and causes severe surface furring, leaving you with ruined boards and a massive compensation claim.

So how do we stop that from happening? It all comes down to basic physics and understanding how porous timber behaves. Think of dry timber as a bone dry kitchen sponge. If you pour active chemical onto a dry sponge, it immediately sucks that concentrated liquid deep into its internal pores.

Once sodium hypochlorite gets drawn deep into the wood cells, you cannot rinse it out. It sits in there, quietly destroying the wood structure from the inside out. But, if you thoroughly pre wet that deck with clean water first, the core of the timber fills up with fresh water.

That simple step of saturating the core means your active chemical mix stays strictly on the surface where the actual organic green algae and biological biofilm live. And because it stays on the surface, a much weaker solution, say one point zero percent to one point five percent sodium hypochlorite with a bleach compatible surfactant, will easily clear the growth without burning the wood.

Time management on wood is also completely critical. On render or paving, you might let a chemical mix dwell for twenty or thirty minutes. On timber, your dwell time must be strictly controlled, kept strictly under ten to fifteen minutes. You watch it like a hawk, and as soon as that green algae turns clear or yellow, you begin your rinse.

And when it comes to rinsing, put the turbo nozzle away! High pressure jet washing on softwood decks is a total disaster. You will gouge lines into the timber, strip out the soft spring growth rings, and ruin the profile of the board.

What you want is low pressure rinsing, using a wide twenty five degree or forty degree fan nozzle, keeping your operational pressure under six hundred PSI. All you are trying to do with that rinse is gently knock off the dead organic slurry that the chemistry has already broken down. Let the chemical do the heavy lifting, not the force of the water.

Chapter 2

Neutralisation, the 48 Hour Drying Rule, and Professional Standards

Now, once you have rinsed your softwash solution off the deck, the job is only half done. This is where so called splash and dash operators walk away, and it is a massive mistake. Sodium hypochlorite leaves timber highly alkaline, pushing the pH way up. If you leave wood in an alkaline state, chemical degradation continues, and the wood looks dull, grey, and lifeless.

You must neutralise the surface. Applying an acidic wood brightener, like Wood X Pro Wood Brightener or a properly diluted oxalic acid solution, immediately stops the chemical action and balances the pH of the timber.

The visual transformation when you spray an acid brightener onto freshly cleaned wood is unbelievable. It works like magic right in front of your eyes. It reverses that bleached appearance, neutralises the residual alkali, and instantly restores those rich, warm golden tones to the grain.

But here is the next crucial rule that so many contractors skip because they are rushing to finish the job: the strict twenty four to forty eight hour drying mandate before applying any oil or sealer.

I see contractors softwash a deck in the morning and try to slap a coat of decking oil on it in the afternoon. That is an absolute recipe for failure. Allowing the decking to dry completely ensures that the oil penetrates deep into the wood fibers. If the wood is still wet, the oil will not be able to soak in effectively, leading to a less durable finish and reduced protection.

When moisture is trapped inside the timber cells under a coat of fresh oil, the oil cannot bond. Within weeks, that oil will start flaking, peeling, and turning blotchy, and you will trap dampness inside the timber, which leads directly to wood rot. You have to explain to your customer that wood restoration is a multi stage process, not an hour long quick fix.

You survey, you pre wet, you apply a low strength controlled chemical mix, you rinse under low pressure, you neutralise with a brightener, and then you leave the site to dry completely for at least a day or two depending on the weather before coming back to apply your protective finish.

That level of care and surface specific knowledge is what separates a certified professional from a cowboy with a pressure washer. Customers will gladly pay top money when you can explain the science of what you are doing and why you are taking steps to protect their property.
