So, how do we clean resin bound gravel safely and professionally without risking structural damage? It all comes down to controlling your active strength and using a proper application workflow. For green algae on resin, a controlled sodium hypochlorite mix at one point five percent to two percent active strength is usually the sweet spot. But applying raw bleach solution alone is a mistake because it runs straight through the porous gravel bed before it can do its job. You need to combine it with a high quality, bleach compatible surfactant like Clever Wash.

The surfactant lowers the surface tension of the water, allowing the solution to cling to the organic biofilm, wet the surface evenly, and stay active right where the algae is anchored. You must pre wet all adjacent lawns, flower beds, and sensitive foliage with clean fresh water. This fills the plant cells so that any accidental overspray cannot be absorbed.

Using a dedicated softwash system or a chemical resistant low pressure sprayer, apply your mixed solution evenly across the driveway from the highest point down to the lowest point. Step three is light agitation, but only where necessary. Use a soft bristle broom to gently work the solution into heavily shaded or textured areas. Never, ever use wire brushes or stiff mechanical rotaries on resin, as metal bristles can scratch the aggregate and dislodge the binder.

Step four is your dwell time and rinse. Allow the chemical a full fifteen minute dwell period to completely oxidize the organic cell walls. You will see the green film sanitize and disappear right before your eyes. Once the dwell time is complete, rinse the surface thoroughly using low pressure domestic mains water or a soft wash rinse nozzle. You get a spotless, like new finish without disturbing a single grain of aggregate.
